The Mission of Christian Educational Services

Ideals and Goals

Back to CES Home

It appears that few Christians develop unshakable biblical convictions on their own, independent of those who originally taught them. Consequently, the convictions of many have been badly shaken when the credibility of their church or favorite teachers was lost. Not having learned the skill of critical thinking, many have not made point-by-point doctrinal judgments and have been forced into an "all or nothing" mindset, which is encouragedby many churches anyway.

Christians need to be taught how to think analytically so that they can "rightly divide" each doctrinal issue on its own biblical merit without either rejecting everything someone presents or swallowing it whole. We want to encourage those believers taking advantage of our materials not to lean on us to supply them with all the right answers. They should not fall into an "accept or reject" mode with teachings produced by CES, but see them as a catalyst for developing their own convictions.

This is, in fact, how we ourselves approach biblical issues. We try to recognize the truth in what anyone presents and incorporate it into our overall understanding of God's Word. We believe this approach is biblical:"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good " (1 Thessalonians 5:21).Charles F. Baker expressed it well:

"Where great minds disagree, it is sometimes wisdom not to side with one against the other, but to analyze carefully the views of each to see whether both might have some elements of truth. It is difficult to believe that men of God on one side or the other of this question should be completely in error. If such is not the case, then it is evident that some principle of interpretation has been overlooked by both sides."
Our mission is not to indoctrinate, but to educate and to help Christians to think scripturally, logically and insightfully. Our goal is to enable the student to do biblical research for himself so he is able to develop his own convictions, separate truth from error and become a effective communicator of God's Word. We adhere to the hope that sincere searchers of the same scriptures can arrive at the same conclusions (Philippians 3:15).
